Sonar Pipeline Inspection

Profiling Sonar provides the capability to profile murky-liquid filled pipelines using acoustics.

The reason sonar is appealing is simple: CCTV cameras used in murky water cannot collect useful images whereas sonar can. In addition, sonar provides accurate quantifiable data representing the characteristics of the pipeline. This data can be plotted in a variety of formats indicating pipe size, deformations, defects and debris.

Dependant on application, the profiling sonar can be mounted on either PipeEye’s tracked vehicle, or flotation platform.

Sonar profiles are provided by a narrow-beam 675kHz to 1.2MHz sonar head. The sonar head generates an acoustic pulse in a very narrow cone with a sound footprint approximately 2 inches in diameter. The distance into the pipeline and the pitch and roll of the transducer is logged with the sonar data.

Sonar Reporting

Once the sonar information is collected in the field PipeEye can plot the data in a number of formats providing a clear visualization of the condition of the fluid-filled portion of the pipe. PipeEye can produce 3-D profiles of the entire pipeline viewable in sections. Each section will indicate volume of build-up, deformities, restrictions of flow, water level and areas of concern.

Raw Sonar Data Collection

Currently there are several proprietary post analysis and imaging programs being used for sonar pipe inspection reports. If you already have a reporting standard you follow, PipeEye can provide the raw sonar data only, allowing you to process the data and report as you require. The file provided would be viewable using the 881 Imagenex freeware with distance into the pipe displayed on-screen and logged with the sonar data.
